Abstract Patient safety management identifies the elements necessary for the management and improvement of patient safety. A quality management system gives the framework needed to monitor and improve performance in any area. The current study seeks to assess nurses’ perception of patient safety management in ISO 9001-2008 certified and non certified Cairo university hospitals. A descriptive comparative study design was utilized to achieve the aim of the present study. The study was conducted at the New Kaser El-Aini Teaching Hospital and El Manial specialized Hospital. Convenient samples of (27)unit nurse managers and(53) staff nurses where working at the medical ICUs in New Kaser El-Aini Teaching Hospital (ISO 9001- 2008certified hospital) and (12)unit nurse managers and (60) staff nurses working at the medical ICUs in El Manial Specialized Hospital (non ISO 9001-2008 certified hospital) were included in the study. For the purpose of this study, two patient safety management questionnaires were modified and utilized. The current study showed that the majority of unit nurse managers and staff nurses had a good perception of patient safety management in both ISO 9001-2008 certified hospital and non ISO 9001- 2008certified hospital. The results concluded that there was no statistical differenece between unit nurse managers perception of patient safety management in ISO 9001-2008 certified and non ISO 9001- 2008certified hospital and there were statistical significant differences between staff nurses perception of patient safety management in ISO 9001- 2008 certified and non ISO 9001- 2008certified hospital. The study recommended that patient safety requires continuous monitoring from managers by raising awareness of hospital staff about patient safety policies and procedures and should provide safety education to health care team members that include training on team-work and education about communication skills. |
