Abstract This work was designed to study the effect of nicotine administration and the effect of its withdrawal on albino rat testis. The study included also the potential role of green tea extract on the amelioration of the nicotine effect on the testis. Histopathological and histochemical examination of the testis of nicotine treated rats showed degenerated and distorted seminiferous tubules with complete absence of sperms. The interstitial tissue showed decrease in number of Leydig cells. Image analysis of the cell layers height and tubular diameter showed significant decrease. There was, also, significant decrease in testosterone level. However, the testis of nicotine and green tea treated rats showed less degenerated seminiferous tubules. There was significant increase in testosterone level of treated rats. Histopathological examination of testis of rats sacrificed after one month followed cessation of nicotine administration showed almost normal seminiferous tubules with usual organization of spermatogonia, spermatocytes and sperms inside lumen. The results of the study were discussed, with a final conclusion of the harmful effect of nicotine on reproduction. |
