Abstract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic disease in which airflow is obstructed. This obstruction is usually progressive and irreversible. Also; COPD is a significant cause of disability, mortality, impaired health-related quality of life and sexual life. Sexual Function is a complex human behavior that is affected by many physiological and psychological factors. Dysfunction or dissatisfaction in any of the main areas of sexual behavior-interest (libido, orgasm) can arise as a result of both patho-physiological and psychological mechanism.
Aim of the study:
The present study is conducted to determine the effect of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on sexual functioning of women suffering from this disease compared to healthy women.
Design:
A descriptive explorative design used to achieve the aim of the study
Subjects and setting:
The present study carried out at Out-Patient Clinic of Chest disease in Suez Canal University Hospitals. A total number of 86 women diagnosed of COPD, married, aged between 21 and 50 years old, compared with a Comparison group from the general apparently healthy women population were the subjects of the present study, the mention settings from August 2012 to January 2013.
Tools of Data Collection:
To achieve the aim of this study, three research tools used in this study:
• The first one is the Socio-demographic data (age, marital status, education, occupational activity, type of work, physical activity, cigarette smoking, stress exposure); medical history and health problems; obstetric and gynecological history; a part dedicated to bronchial problems (intensity and frequency of symptoms, duration of bronchial problems).
The second tool is (The Specific COPD Female Sexual Function Index) developed by the researcher to assess general female sexual behavior and sexual dysfunctions experienced by COPD women.
