Abstract

The major research question of this study is: Does the type of admission of psychiatric patients have an effect on outcome of treatment or not?
The Hypothesis of the Study
It is hypothesized that the type of admission of psychiatric patients to psychiatric hospitals has an effect on the outcome of the provided psychiatric treatment during the period of hospitalization..
Aims of the Current Study
1- Assessment of the impact of involuntary hospital admission on psychiatric patient disease process.
a. - Measurement of readmissions frequency and types within one year after discharge from first admission as a predictor of patient disease outcome in relation to type of first psychiatric admission.
1- Comparison between hospital stay in both voluntary and involuntary admissions as a predictor of disease process.
Parts of Current Study
I. Theoretical Part.
II. Practical Part.
Theoretical Part
This part included the review of literature that consisted of the first three chapters of the study as follows:
Chapter (1)
This chapter described psychiatric hospitalization from international point of view, regarding hospitalization as a therapeutic modality, modes of psychiatric hospitalization regarding hospital stay either: partial or full hospitalization and types of hospital admissions either: voluntary or involuntary, advantages and disadvantages of each type as well. On other hand, this chapter recruited patients’ experiences regarding involuntary hospitalization and also involved the relationships between patients’ diagnoses and type of hospital admission.
Chapter (2)
It involved an overview of psychiatric hospitalization in Egypt. It started by illustrating the profile of mental illnesses in Egypt, followed by discussing the impact of psychiatric hospitalization in Egypt as a whole as a source of stigma from mental illness. On other hand, mental health legislation in Egypt regarding types of admission and a statistical geographic overview of mental health facilities and services in Egypt were involved.
Chapter (3)
It illustrated factors affecting psychiatric patient outcome after hospitalization. These factors were initial presentation at emergency psychiatric services, hospital milieu, types of admission, duration of hospital stay, roles of different treatment modalities including psychotherapy and electroconvulsive therapy, previous hospital admissions and finally readmissions both frequency and types of readmissions.
