Abstract

Chapter 1 contains a general introduction about optical switching networks, compares optical switching paradigms, and includes the main contributions of the thesis.
Chapter 2 covers the structure of OBS network with its layers. It also includes the detailed explanation of each function presented by the OBS layers. The contention problem has been discussed with the current solutions and challenges. The idea of hybrid optical switching has been presented.
Chapter 3 illustrates the process of offset time management that is performed in the MAC layer of OBS network. It includes the blocking probability calculation in the case of variable offset time. Two algorithms have been applied in order to manage the offset time.
Chapter 4 discusses the role of wavelength converters in resolving the contention problem. A detailed analysis is presented to calculate the blocking probability in a core node equipped with wavelengh converter pool. Also, it includes an optimization to the value of node conversion capability that provides the minimum loss probability.
Chapter 5 presents a WDM/OCDM hybrid optical switch for supporting traffic multiplexing feature as well as reducing the maintenance and managementmultiplexing feature as well as reducing the maintenance and management overhead. Also, it compares our proposed HOS with previous OBS node which accepts requests only for burst scheduling. Moreover, it includes various numerical results for evaluating the performance.
Chapter 6 includes the conclusions, recommendations, and future scope of the work.
