Abstract Preterm birth and its complications are the leading cause of perinatal mortality . The rate of preterm birth in USA for example has increased from 10.6 % in 1990 to 11.7 & in 2011, now representing nearly one in every eight births. Administration of antenatal corticosteroids to mothers at high risk for preterm birth has been shown to markedly improve neonatal outcomes, decrease the rate of perinatal death, respiratory distress syndrome, Intraventricular hemorrhage, Necrotizing enterocolities and intensive care admissions. In contrast to the beneficial effects, maternal corticosteroid administration can result in neonatal hypoglycemia and hyperbilirubinemia. |
