Abstract

The study was conducted in an unserved slum area in the East district of Alexandria governorate named Ezbet Fatta (one of Ezab El- Matar). The study included all preschool children (aged 2-6 years) living in the study setting together with their mothers. from 82 families have an under five child, 61 mothers only accepted to be included with their children in the study this make a total number of 90 children. Data was collected through: A pre designed structured interview questionnaire was used to collect the data required from the mothers before and after implementation of the intervention. Clinical examination on the children Anthropometric measures of the children. Laboratory investigations: hemoglobin level, Urine and stool analysis. The suitable statistical package was used for appropriate significance tests. from this study, the following results were obtained: - Prevalence of iron deficiency anemia among preschool children was 52.2% - Prevalence of IDA was higher in females than males but not reach a significant level, on the other hand there was significant association between prevalence of IDA and mother’s age and family size. - Not enough socioeconomic standard, illiterate and low level of educations of mother’s and father’s significantly increase risk for IDA. - Infected children with IPI significantly increase risk for IDA. - Less than half of the children (47.7%) suffered from mild anemia, 3.3% and 1.1% suffered from moderate and severe anemia respectively. Intestinal parasites were identified in 43.3% of the study population. Multi-infection was detected in 17.7% of cases. - It was found that 28.9%, 11.1%, and 8.9% of the children were suffered from wasting, stunting, and underweight respectively. - Prevalence of IDA was significantly higher among children with low dietary iron intake. - The number of anemic preschool children decreased from 43 children to only 11 children after the intervention. - There was a non-significant Increase in BMI among healthy and anemic children on other hand there was significant increase in BMI between pre and post test for anemic children. - The post-test situation of the current program revealed considerable improvement whether in the nutritional knowledge, attitude and practice of the mothers. Based on the findings of the present study, one can conclude that, prevalence of anemia was 52.2% among children 2-6 years. Socioeconomic factors (e.g. level of mother education, not enough SES and family size), mother’ age bad and dietary habits are the main contributing factors of IDA among studied children. It is a serious concern that, iron deficiency anemia is high among children 2-6years. Screening for iron deficiency anemia should be directed to high risk groups and dietary programs should be implemented to improve awareness on healthy feeding habits.
