Abstract

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurobehavioral disorder of childhood and can profoundly affect the academic achievement, well-being, and social interactions of children. ADHD is an early onset, that persist into adolescence and adulthood in a sizeable majority of affected children and adolescents of both sexes. There are predominant three subtypes of ADHD: inattentive, hyper-activity–impulsive and combined subtypes. The diagnosis of ADHD is based on criteria specified by the DSM-IV. The prevalence of ADHD has been reported with great variations among different studies. Variations in prevalence figures occur both within and between countries depending on a number of factors, including the diagnostic criteria used, age and gender of the population, socioeconomic status and urban living. A marked difference in the prevalence of ADHD symptoms when the evaluation was performed by parents compared to teachers. The prevalence was consistently higher in the parent evaluation. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is commonly associated with other psychiatric and neurological conditions. In fact, the vast majority of co-morbidities with ADHD represent functional impairments and symptoms, which are not rooted in specific diseases. The most frequent comorbidity was oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), followed by mood disorder and conduct disorder. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of ADHD among children attending in pediatric outpatient clinic in Menoufyia University Hospital. The research was conducted between January 2013 till the end of July 2013.600 males and females children, aged from (5-12 years) were chosen to be assessed and studied by our tools. All children were subjected to full medical history , clinical examination and questionnaire based on DSM-IV criteria which filled by parents of children . The prevalence of ADHD in our study was 19.7%. and was higher in males than in females with a ratio 2.7:1.The prevalence was high in rural area compared to in urban areas. Also our study revealed that prevalence of ADHD increase with increased age . As regard clinical type of ADHD our results revealed that 47.4% of ADHD children presented with predominantly ADHD-C, compared to 29.6% presented with ADHD-HI and 23% presented with ADHD-I. Also our results showed that there was many factors that were associated with increase possibility of developing ADHD such as male gender, who lives in urban areas, in low socioeconomic status, in large families, in families have past history of ADHD, in children living with single parent, in preterm children and among bottle fed children.
