Abstract
The recent history of the eastern harbour of alexandria shows that it has been subjected to the effect of continuous changes from year o year in spite of its name the eastern harbour is no longer a harbour but a small semi closed basin except on its northern side where it communicates with the sea through two outlets the successive investigations of phytoplankton in this area their density distribution and composition scince 1956 el maghraby and halim 1965 until the present work 1989-1990 have confirmed that the conditions in the eastern harbour are very unstable on both a short term week to week and long term year to year such unstable conditions are governed by its hydrography which in turn is dependent on climatic variability and the input of domestic waste water.
