Abstract

In this work, the treatment of refinery petroleum wastewaters is performed by a variety of methods. The degree of oil removal depends mainly on the concentration and physical nature of the present oil and materials used for degradation. The primary objective was to study the degradation of oily wastewaters from refinery companies using metal complexes of cationic quaternized poly (4-vinyl pyridine), (P4-VP) M.W. 60,000 to produce poly (N-trimethyl Silyl-4- Vinyl pyridinium Chloride) P-4VPC and poly (N-trimethyl Silyl-4- Vinyl pyridinium iodide) P-4VPI, were prepared by quaternization of the P4-VPby chloro tri methyl silane and iodo tri methyl silane respectively to be complexed with ferric chloride. Also, we tried the effect of metal nanocomposites of the quaternized polymers with zero valent iron and hydrogen peroxide (Fenton reaction). We studied the influence of hydrogen peroxide and complex concentrations, initial pH of the solution and the time of the degradation. In each case, the residual of crude oil, contained in the oily wastewater after degradation, was determined by GC analysis. The prepared materials were investigated by FTIR, TEM, SEM, TGA, DSC and XRD analysis. Also, the surface properties were performed. It was shown that a 40–85% of crude oil was degraded. The oxidation mechanism depends on the production of active free radicals such as hydroxyl radicals (•OH) that play the role of the oxidative agent.
