Abstract The peculiar behaviour of the compounds containing the 4-nitrobenzy1 group in alkaline media had attracted the attention of chemists since the early decades of the present century compounds such as 4-nitrobenzy1 halides tosylate sulphides dimethy1sulphonium salts tripheny1 phosphonium salts ammonium salts and pyridiimium salts behave differently in presence of alkali giving rise to a wide variety of reaction products. |
