المستخلص Commercial services are of the major services in Assiut. With the increase in population, such services spread without rules or planning laws governing their deployment by type of service and citizens’ need in each of the different residential districts in Assiut City. A closer look at the situation reveals that certain types of commodities are concentrated in some districts, whereas other districts do not have the same. This led to residents of such districts greatly depending on adjacent districts for meeting their needs of essential goods. This, in turn, led to significant traffic jams in the city center, as well as being overcrowded; because various stores – particularly consumer goods (clothes, shoes, bags)- are there while they are supposed to be in the middle of each neighborhood/ district to meet frequent residents’ needs. Also, several major commercial activities invade residential districts instead of the city center without any organization, because the economic value of land there is lower than that of the city center; with its subsequent implications of disturbing pedestrians and automatic traffic in these districts.
