Abstract 1.1. Brief history of the study site The study site is a shallow area of the Eastern Harbour of Alexandria, near to the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries. The first investigation of this area was done by El-Maghraby and Halim (1959) who studied in addition to plankton, salinity, temperature and nutrients. Banoub (1960) was the first to study the fouling of glass plates submerged in the Eastern Harbour. An investigation on the plankton of Alexandria waters and its surroundings. together with the hydrographic factors was carried by Dowidar (1965). This was followed by (El-Kirsh, 1969) who studied some hydrographic factors for a number of stations. An ecological study on marine fouling organisms in the Eastern Harbour was done by Megally (1970). El-Rayis (1973) studied the nutrients and hydrographic conditions in the Mediterranean Sea water of Alexandria. Wahby and El-Tabbakh (1974) analyzed iron and copper content in the Eastern Harbour of Alexandria. The seasonal variations and settlement behaviour of the principle fouling organisms was investigated (Ghobashy. 1976). Selim (1978) carried his work on the systematic study of polychaetes in the Eastern Harbour. In 1979, Al-Handhal made a systematic and ecological study on phytoplanktonic and benthic diatoms of the Eastern Harbour. |
