Abstract 1. Chapter 1 includes a literature survey which deals with the following field of interest: a. Study of solute-solvent interactions which take into account the intermolecular forces such as ion-dipole, dipole-dipole, ion-induced dipole, dispersion forces, and hydrogen bonding. The classification of solvents is also discussed in view of Brönsted, parker, chastrette, and Maria’s suggestions. b. Study of the properties of pure 1,2-dimethoxyethane solvent, (DME), and its aqueous mixtures. c. Relevance of Tris and Bis compounds. d. The potentiometric determination of the dissociation constant of BH*acid using cells without liquid junction potential. e. Solvent effects on the dissociation of weak acids which are found to emphasize the major role of solute-solvent interactions. f. from the study of solubilities in various solvents, the thermodynamic quantities specifically the enthalpy and entropy of transfer of the base have been derived, from the variation of solubility with temperature and discussed aiming to reveal structure informations about the studied solvent mixtures. g. The aim of the present work which concerns the effect of adding DME to H2Oon the dissociation of Tris.Hand Bis.H*from the view point of solute-solvent interactions. 2. Chapter 2 describes the purification of laboratory chemicals, preparation of hydrogen and silver-silver chloride electrodes, the design of the cell used, preparation of solutions, the method for the determination of the acidic dissociation constants of protonated Tris and Bis in the studied solvent mixtures, and finally the method used. |
