Abstract

Recently there has been a great effort to develop a source of protein independent of hydrocarbons. Owing to a storage of protein for animal feed and to the disposal problem of oil polution, attempts have been made to produce single cell protein (SCP) from oil hydrocarbons. The end products are microbial cells, undegraded substrate, and spent culture medium, of the microorganisms, some fungi have been the subject of most intensive study because of their usually high biodegradative activity of the hydro- carbons, ease with which they can be cultured and of their large amount of biomass produced. The utilization of oil hydrocarbons is important not only to maintain cleaning of the environment but also to save resources.
In Egypt, many efforts have been devoted to evaluate the capability of several oil hydrocarbons for SCP production. However, little attention has been paid to study in syste- matic way, the potentiality of wastes resulted from oil refineries for SCP production.
In the present study an attempt has been made to utilize the spindle oil Balaeem oil fraction, to produce SCP by
P.purpurrescens This was approached by outlining the
various physiological factors initiating the conversion of a selected protein rich fungus into SCP.
