Abstract

A minimum time-resolution expression is considered for leading-edge timing with two scintillation counters in coincidence, in which the rise tine T of single electron response (SER) and its decay time Tz are inserted:
31.ล
3.05 (T2- T2/%
X = R / √6
where R is the total mumber of photoelectrons charac-
terizing the pulse.
Correlation with the parameters involved in other theories indicates:
1. The scintillator contribution to T, which is shown to be the r.. time jitter of the photomultiplier at small thickness of scintillator divided by 1.58.
2. The mean life characteristic of phosphor = 1.95 T2 The decay time of SER is found to be directly proport ional to the cube root of the scintillator volume and is least value is equal to the decay constant of the small plastic scintillator.
. For constant fraction timing, the ratio of /c.t 3 is analytically found, also the shift of the optimus of n/R curves for o.f timing to the higher value of n/R is verified.
