Abstract

Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) is an important medicinal plant, contains various medicinal important compounds. Concentrations of these compounds vary from one part to another. In the present study, a comparison the callus (30 days old) and (leaves and roots) of the field grown plant (five and seven months old), has been with respect to their different components. These compounds included the metabolic activity, present in various plant parts and in the callus, the amount of NPK, Protein, total carbohydrates, inulin, total phenolic content (TPC), ascorbic acid and free radical scavenging activity. The water extracts of the studied samples of Cichorium intybus were tested for their prebiotic effect on growth of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus casei. The methanolic extracts of the studied samples of Cichorium intybus were tested for their antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria like gram positive ( Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus ) and gram negative ( klebsiella beaumon, Escherichia coli). The results showed that Cichorium intybus has good sources of inulin, total phenolic content (TPC) and ascorbic acid. Cichorium intybus methanolic extracts showed excellent radical scavenging activity . However GC-MS analysis of chemicals constituting methanolic extracts showed that studied samples of C. intybus contain compounds that have biological activities such as Taraxasterol , β-Amyrin , alpha-Amyrin , Lupeol , Podosporin A, Bauerenol. different parts of C. intybus ( callus, leaves and roots) during different ages are having prebiotic effect on growth of tested bifidobacteria and having antibacterial activity against both gram positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus) and gram negative bacteria (klebsiella beaumon , Escherichia coli ).
