Abstract

Date palms have been cultivated for its edible fruit and it is called as ”tree of life” due to high nutritive value and long life.
Tahneek is performed based on the practice of the Holy Prophet. The Hadith have indicated that Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) softened dates in his mouth and rubbed them over the soft palates of newborns.
Date fruit is rich in many nutrients like, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals.
Main carbohydrates in date are glucose, fructose and sucrose, which are readily absorbed and are essential for nutrition of brain in newborn.
Dates contain essential amino acids like lysine, leucine, isoleucine and etc and nonessential like tyrosine tryptophan and others.
Date contains the amino acid arginine which is essential in newborns and infants.
Most of minerals that present in dates also present in human breast milk and are essential to newborns.
Date contains vitamin K, C, E and other vitamins that are essential in newborns.
Dates have antibacterial effect against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria and active against impenemes resistant Pseudomonas areuginosa.
Dates have antioxidant activity due to its content of phenolics, caretenoids, vitamins (E & C) and minerals like selenium

Oxygen free radicals cause many diseases in neonates which is referred to as ”oxygen radical diseases of newborn” so date being rich in antioxidant can be of great value in these neonatal diseases?
We still in the need of more studies in this field.
