Abstract The present study aimed at developing some reading comprehension skills for first year secondary school students and their attitudes towards reading through the use of multiple intelligences activities. The study adopted the quasi- experimental pretest- posttest design. Participants in the present study were first year secondary school female students. Two classes were randomly selected from Mansoura Algedida Secondary School for Girls in Mansoura, Dakhlia governorate. Then, they were randomly assigned into two groups, experimental (31 students) and control(30 students). The experimental group students received training through using multiple intelligences-based activities for developing their reading comprehension skills and attitudes towards reading. On the other hand, students in the control group received regular instruction. In order to gather data and achieve the purpose of this study, four instruments were used, namely Reading Comprehension Skills Inventory, Pre-post Reading Comprehension Test, Multiple Intelligences Inventory and a Reading Attitude Scale. The present study provided evidence for the effectiveness of using multiple intelligences-based activities in developing the experimental group students’ reading comprehension skills and their attitudes towards reading. There is evidence that adopting the multiple intelligences activities helped the experimental group students develop their reading skills and attitudes towards reading. The study recommended that the curriculum designers should take into consideration MIs-based activities when building EFL language courses.A number of recommendations and suggestions for further research were presented. |
