Abstract

In the context of literature search, no published work concerning the water quality of Bahr Mowais Canal was encountered. For this reason, this study was undertaken to describe and assess possible changes in water quality of the canal. Ecological parameters were analyzed and compared with standard permissible limits. The data indicate that the water of Bahr Mowais Canal is loaded to various degrees with certain pollutants. The load varies as a function of polluting species, location along the extension of the canal, and sampling time. The temporal variable covers both a short term of one year, as well as a medium term of 6 years. Biological pollution reached staggering limits, and is increasing steadily. Different classification systems were attempted to describe the suitability of water for irrigation using the USDA diagram, but uncertainties smear decision making with regard to degree of water suitability. It was recognized that the best possible approach involves the utilization of computer based models, which would delineate cause-effect relations, and predict probable future changes in the water quality.
