Abstract The present work aimed to further our knowledge about the bryoflora of St. Katherine protected area in Southern Sinai. Five excursions were set out for this purpose, covering the period from November 2009 to July 2012. Seventy moss samples were collected from five wadis located in and around St. Katherine city, namely; Wadi El-Arbaeen, Wadi Teffaha, Wadi Tala’a, Wadi Telah and Wadi El- Tala’a El-Kebera. This work includes: Diagnostic descriptions of genera and species recorded from the study area. Identification keys for the orders, the families, the genera and the species studied. Floristic comparisons between the species recorded in the present study and those of other territories of Egypt, neighboring countries and the world. The study revealed the presence of 21 species belonging to 9 genera 5 families and 4 orders. Five species as new records to Sinai moss flora namely; Entosthodon fascicularis, E. muhlenbergii, E. pulchellus, Ptychostomum torquescens and Pohlia melanodon. Three species as new records to Egyptian moss flora, namely; Ptychostomum pallens, P. rubens and Pohlia wahlenbergii bringing the total number of mosses recorded in Egypt to 161 species. |
