Abstract

The sub synchronous oscillation phenomena of an induction motor fed from a series compensated feeder line is investigated in this thesis. With the aid of D-decomposition technique and eigenvalue analysis, induction motor instability due to both electrical and electromechanical resonance is determined.
Efficient methods are presented in this thesis for achieving optimum starting transient performance of a doubly fed induction motor drive. This method is implemented based on the injection of the rotor circuit with a controllable variable frequency supply voltage that follows the motor speed variation during the starting period. The rotor injected voltage is generated using a pulse width modulation inverter. The steady-state model of the machine is used to calculate the value of the rotor injected voltage and its phase angle corresponding to maximum starting torque and minimum starting current conditions. The motor speed is estimated based on MRAS using the stator voltage and current measurements.
