Abstract Leukemia is a serous illness that can have a substantial impact on the patient’s functioning and performance of basic activities of daily living, such as eating, bathing, and exercising which are impeded for many patients. The present study aimed to assess nurses’ role regarding educational needs for patient with leukemia, the study was conducted at Oncology and Hematology Department at Zagazig University Hospital. The study was including convenience sample (30) nurses working at Oncology and Hematology Department at Zagazig University Hospital. Data were collected through the first tool include: Questionnaire interview sheet for assessment of nurse’s knowledge regarding educational needs of the patient with leukemia concerning with demographic characteristics and identify nurses knowledge related to educational needs of patient with leukemia. The second tool include: An observational check list to assess nurses’ role regarding care provided to meet educational needs of patient with leukemia: such as personal hygiene, control. bleeding and prevent injury, prevent and control infection, adequate nutritional supply, and control site effects of line oftreatment. Results of this study, less than three quarter of studied nurses had satisfactory knowledge about care of leukemic patient, more than half of nurses had adequate practice regarding care provided to meet educational needs of patient with leukemia includes maintain hygiene and skin integrity, control of infection, bleeding tendency, maintain balanced nutrition, and controlling the side effects of line of medication. The study recommended development of standard of care regarding satisfying patients’ needs of patient with leukemia is mandatory and should be available at the unit. |
