Abstract

Cleft lip is one of the most common congenital anomalies worldwide and domestic, and despite the fact that it may not be life-threatening but many functions such as feeding, digestion, speech, middle-ear ventilation, hearing, respiration and facial and dental development can be disturbed because of the structures involved.
One of the main cosmetic drawbacks of cleft lip repair is the development of the vermilion notch. Several surgical methods for repairing this notch have been postulated; including the Millard repair and the Z-plasty.
The main objective of the present study was to assess the outcome of the Z-plasty technique in reducing vermilion notch in primary unilateral Cleft Lip repair.
A sample of 53 infants with primary cleft lip below 6 month of age was selected.
The results showed that the majority of the cases had good repair outcome, the operative time and intraoperative bleeding was satisfactory.
Also the results showed shorter operative time and less intraoperative bleeding among the younger age group (below 3 months).
The above results confirmed the hypothesis of the study and ensured the effectiveness of the Z-plasty technique in improving the cosmetic outcome of the cleft lip repair.
