Abstract

Background: Reproductive Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in all matters relating to the reproductive system, and to its functions and processes. Adolescents with disabilities need the same access to reproductive health information, including information about safe sex, sexually transmitted diseases, planning healthy pregnancies, pap tests, clinical breast exams, and mammograms as those adolescents who are not identified as having a disability. Aim of the study: The study conducted to evaluate the impact of educational program about reproductive health for blind and deaf adolescent girls in Assiut Governorate. Subjects and methods: The study was Quasi-experimental research design. It was conducted in Al Noor school for blind and Al Amal School for deaf girls in Assiut Governorate. The total studied sample was 80 girls (50 girls from Al Amal school and 30 girls from Al Noor school) which were selected through convenient sample. Tools of the study: the study included three tools: - a structured interview sheet, questions used to assess disabled girls’ knowledge about reproductive health, likert scale which used to measure attitudes towards reproductive health, an observational checklist sheet to assess practice related perineal care and finally the educational program. Results: 36.2% of the studied sample their ages ranged from 16-<18 years and (42.5%) of them were secondary school. 91.2% mentioned menstruation as one of their changes during adolescence also, (83.8%) of them mentioned breast growth. All the studied sample (100%) has poor knowledge regarding to reproductive health in pre test while their knowledge improved in post test to 58.8%. Regarding to perineal care, all of the studied sample (100%) carried out all steps of perineal care except three steps which include the correct direction for cleaning the perineum, while their practice improved in post and follow up test. There was highly statistically significant difference between disabled girls’ knowledge in pre, immediate post test and follow-up (P= 0.000*). There was no statistically significant difference between total score of disabled girls’ attitude toward reproductive health in pre, post and follow-up test (P= 0.794(. There was highly statistically significant difference between disabled girls’ knowledge and type of disability in follow-up test (P= 0.000*), while there was no statistically significant difference between total score of disabled girls’ knowledge and age, grade and finally place of residence (0.986, 0.054, 0.189) respectively. Conclusion: There was highly statistically significant difference between disabled girls’ knowledge in pre, immediate post test and follow-up (P= 0.000*). There was no statistically significant difference between total score of disabled girls’ attitude toward reproductive health in pre, post and follow-up test (P= 0.794(. The study recommended that: Continues health education programs should be implemented for increasing awareness through resourcefulness and involving persons with disabilities in programme design and monitoring. Conducting awareness sessions targeting disabled girls’ mothers about reproductive health.
