Abstract

Oral diseases can have a negative impact on the functional, social and psychological well-being of children and their families. Oral health and dental treatment have an impact on speaking, eating and appearance, thereby affecting quality of life, which is a multidimensional concept. Thus, there has been a greater clinical focus on the measurement of quality of life as a complement to the assessment of oral health needs, the prioritizing of care and the evaluation of the outcomes of treatment strategies.
The present study design is cross-sectional descriptive. The aim of the study was to assess the change of Oral Health-Related Quality of Life for children and their families after full mouth rehabilitation under general anesthesia.
The study sample included 50 parents of children that underwent a full mouth dental rehabilitation under G.A. The parents in the study were randomly selected from the general anesthesia unit of the Pediatric Dentistry Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University.
The study tool used was the Arabic version of the short-form version of the Child Oral Health Quality of Life (COHQOL), which comprises the Parental-Caregivers Perception Questionnaire (P-CPQ) and the Family Impact Scale (FIS).
The parents were asked to fill in the first questionnaire on the day of the dental rehabilitation, which comprised questions addressing the child’s oral state within the past 3 months. One month after completion of the G.A a follow up appointment was scheduled. Parents were asked to fill in the same questionnaire again, which evaluated the child’s oral condition in the past month after completion of the dental rehabilitation.
Changes in OHRQoL were determined by comparing base-line and follow up data for the mean scores and the prevalence of impacts.
The results of the study showed that the evaluative properties of the P-CPQ and the FIS were acceptable. There were statistically significant reductions in the mean P-CPQ and FIS scores after the dental rehabilitation, which indicates improvement in all aspects of OHRQoL for the children and their families.
The present study proved that dental rehabilitation under general anesthesia improved the OHRQoL for young Egyptian children and their families.
