Abstract The aim of this work was to study the clinical effect of cryotherapy on the treatment of oral erosive lichen planus (OLP) in comparison with topical corticosteroid. In this clinical study, 20 patients that have been clinically and histologically diagnosed with oral erosive lichen planus were selected from Oral Medicine, Periodontology, Radiology and diagnosis Department in Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University. The patients were equally divided into two groups: Study group (I): Ten patients were treated with cryotherapy in two successive cycles of freezing and thawing 2 minutes each of them.Control group (II): Ten patients were treated with topically applied corticosteroid in form of orabase 4 times per day for 6 weeks. Patients in the two groups were examined and re-evaluated for pain scale (VAS) and lesion size score at four time follow up period; base line, 10 days, one month, and three months. Statistical analysis of the present study revealed a decrease in the size score of the lesion and the pain measures in both studied groups. However the decrease was not statistically significant. Group (I): six patients presented complete remission of the disease, and three patients showed improvement, while the last patient showed relapse of lesion after two months of treatment with cryosurgery treatment. In group (II): five patients presented complete remission of the disease, and three patients showed clinical improvement while two patients did not show any improvement. The results of this study suggested that the cryotherapy resembles the topical corticosteroid. Further studies are needed to know the effect of cryosurgery in the treatment of EOLP. |
