Abstract Uterine prolapse refers to a condition in which the uterus slip out below its normal anatomical position in the pelvic cavity, which protruded into vaginal canal or entirely inverted outside the vagina that called procidentia. This may be associated with one or more of pelvic floor disorders, such as vaginal prolapse and rectocele (Kenny and Wright, 2011). Uterine prolapse has multiple approaches for treatment, which include conservative treatment as pessary, estrogen topical application, and surgical treatment. However, some of these treatment modalities may cause complications that affect women’s life. Maya massage is one of the alternative therapies which help in natural healing with external non-invasive self manipulation for abdominal pelvic organs (Lewis, 2013). Nurses play important roles in the diagnosis and treatment of uterine prolapse, which helps women adapt with their lifestyle modifications by providing health care services and increasiing awareness about uterine prolapse and Maya abdominal self-care massage as a type of complementary alternative therapy “CAT” for uterine prolapse to be safe and effective treatment (Yildirim et al., 2010). The present study aimed to investigate the effect of Maya massage on relieving uterine prolapse degrees. To achieve the study objective, an intervention study had been implemented at Gynaecological Outpatient Clinic and Urogenital Dynamic Unit at Ain-Shams University Maternity Hospital. A purposive sample was used to recruit thirty women with 0, I, II stages of uterine prolapse. Data collection had been carried out through the period from the beginning of December 2013 to the end of July 2014. Two tools of data were used: the first tool was an interviewing questionnaire sheet named ”women’s knowledge regarding Maya massage for uterine prolapse treatment” to assess socio- demographic characteristics of women’s life style, medical-surgical, obstetric history, and knowledge regarding uterine prolapse and Maya massage; the second was a uterine prolapse manifestation follow up sheet to assess the manifestations of uterine prolapse which included (8) manifestations. The results of present study revealed that: women’s age range was between less than twenty to thirty nine, as 70.0% of them were in the age range between 30 to 39 years with mean age (32.1 ± 3.34). Regarding their residence, 66.7% of them came from urban area. As for their working and marital status, all the studied women were married and house wives. In addition, 40.0%, 30.0%, and 30.0% of them were able to read & write, finished their primary and university education respectively. Regarding women’s life style, none of them was smoking while 66.7% of them carried heavy objects. Moreover, 30.0% and 70.0% of the studied women had mild and moderate obesity respectively. Meanwhile, none of the studied women had any chronic diseases. 70.0% of the studied women had pelvic abdominal surgery. Concerning women’s gravida and para, 40.0% of them had four to five times pregnancy and delivery. As for mode of delivery, 60.0% and 40.0% of them had normal and instrumental delivery respectively. Moreover, all of the studied women had associated complication with delivery. 80.0% of the studied women had incomplete correct knowledge regarding uterine prolapse. 100.0% of the studied women had incorrect knowledge regarding Maya massage. 100.0%, i.e., all of the studied women had a total mild manifestation of uterine prolapse before intervention. 70.0% of the studied women had a total mild manifestation of uterine prolapse after intervention by 8 weeks. 30.0% of the studied women had a total mild manifestation of uterine prolapse after intervention by 12 weeks. Finally, there was a highly statistical significant difference between the mean score of uterine prolapse manifestation before, and 12 weeks after intervention. In conclusion, the study revealed that Maya massage significantly relieved uterine prolapse manifestation after intervention by eight and twelve weeks that reflected upon relieving uterine prolapse degrees. Based on this finding, the researcher recommended Maya massage as a complementary alternative therapy, being one of most effective therapeutic options for relieving uterine prolapse manifestations. |
