Abstract

Chronic kidney disease is a world-wide public-health problem in which most of the physical functions of the body are affected including sexual functions. Sexual health is an important aspect of Quality of life (QoL). Aim of the study: This study aimed to evaluate coping strategies, QoL and psychosexual dysfunctions among hemodialysis male patients and the provided nursing role. Materials and Method: An exploratory descriptive cross-sectional research design was conducted at the hemodialysis units of Urology and Nephrology Center at Mansoura University. The data was collected from 100 hemodialysis male patients who corresponded to the inclusion criteria. Socio-demographic, and clinical data sheet, Arizona Sexual Experience Scale, Psychosexual Dysfunction Questionnaire (Male Version), Brief Coping Scale, Quality of Life Index, Dialysis Version, and a questionnaire assessing the Nurses’ Role of Psychosexual Dysfunctions in Hemodialysis Male Patients were used to achieve the purpose of the study. Results: Results revealed that (94%) of the studied patients expressed psychosexual dysfunctions while only 6% expressed good psychosexual functions. There were statistically significant relations between psychosexual dysfunctions, and (age, residence, and hemodialysis duration) while there were no statistical significance with (educational level, occupation, and hemodialysis co-morbidity). Psychosexual dysfunctions were correlated positively with the use of emotional focused coping and correlated negatively with QoL. The current study reported that under the previous circumstances, all the studied patients (100%) reported that nurses do not play any role to manage the psychosexual dysfunctions. Recommendation: Application of psychiatric liaison nursing program in hemodialysis units is recommended.
