Abstract Half a million women lose their lives every year because of pregnancy related complications. Obstructed labour and ruptured uterus contribute up to 70% of maternal mortality. Early detection of abnormal progress and prevention of prolonged labour can significantly reduce maternaland newborn complications. Tools and techniques to monitor labour thus play an important role in saving women’s lives (WHO2012). The partogram or partograph is an inexpensive tool to provide a continuous pictorial overview of labour and is essential to monitor and manage labour. It is a single sheet of paper where all information related to labour is obtained. It is a practical device in a busy labor room with many cases but limited personnel to screen the abnormal labour. With its use, there is no need to record labour-events repeatedly. It predicts deviation from normal progress of labor and proper intervention can be done in time. It facilitates handover and responsibility and accountability of the person conducting labor (Martin, 2002). According to the Polit and Beck (2008) the Partograph can be used by midwives and health workers with adequate training in midwifery who are able to: observe and conduct normal labour and delivery. Perform vaginal examination during labour and assess cervical dilation accurately. Plot cervical dilation accurately on a graph against time. The aim of the current were to assess the effectiveness of an intervention program on nurse’s knowledge and performance regarding the use of the partograph on parturient women and the newborn outcome. Setting This study was conducted at obstetric and gynecology departments of Teaching Hospital and University Hospital at Shebein El- Kom, Menofiya Governorate. Data collection instruments : The instruments used in this study were a self-administrated questionnaire an observation checklist for pre , post- test and followup test to measure the nurses knowledge and their practice before and after the interview program. Partogram is also used to assess nurses. |
