Abstract

Investigation of the lateral swelling of expansive soil on retaining structures is very important for civil engineer. The purpose of the present research is studying the influence of the lateral swell pressure of expansive soil on the earth pressure distribution behind retaining structures.
The used soil is obtained from Assiut el gadida city projects- Assiut- Egypt. It generally contains SiO2, AL2O3 and Fe2O3 as main oxides. For this research, the physical and mechanical properties of the soil are obtained.
When the water added to the expansive soil, it swells and affects the retaining structures. The effect of lateral swell pressures of expansive soil depends on many factors such as water content, density of soil, surcharge, depth from ground surface, the type and the quantity of minerals in soil structure, the time from adding water to the swell soil ,… etc.
