Abstract

• Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of cancer, the third leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, has increased sharply in the last decade, especially in Egypt. Adriamycin (ADR), one of chemotherapeutic agents used for treatment of wide range of human malignancies including HCC. However, due to the increasing awareness of the side effects of conventional medicine, the use of natural products as an alternative to conventional treatment So the present study was carried out to elucidate the curative role of cape gooseberry (CG) (Physalis peruviana) as a nutraceutical agent on hepatocellular carcinoma- linked adverse effects, in addition to evaluate its activity as a chemo-sensitizer for adriamycin treatement. In this study adult male wistar rats 8 weeks old weighing 150-170 g were used, after two weeks of acclimatization, the rats were divided into five groups 6 rats in each one. The obtained result can be summarized as follow: A-In hepatocellular carcinoma rat’s model, it was recorded that: Morphological examination showed a little activity, aggressive behavioral, loss appetite and appearance of tumor on the back and abdomen of the rats and the appearance of spots and tumor in the liver lobes. - Serum and hepatic lipid profiles (TL, TC, TG, LDL and VLDL) level was significantly increased but HDL-C was significantly decreased. - Serum and hepatic total protein content was significantly decreased but serum total bilirubin level was significantly increased. - B-In HCC rats treated with ADR or administered with cape gooseberry juice, it was recorded that Adriamycin (ADR) treatment as a chemotherapy causes a little amelioration in the occurred adverse effects on the tested parameters linked with HCC status. - However, the obtained data strongly suggested the efficacy of CG juice supplementation as a hepatoprotective agent in HCC rat’s model as achieved by the greatly positive effect on the occurred alterations of most biomarkers such as lipids profile, liver function enzymes, oxidative stress, antioxidant defense system. Additionally it has a marked role in membrane stabilizing by mechanisms that include up-regulation of the key apoptotic regulators, modulate cell cycle arrest, initiation of the functional status of hepatocytes with preservation of cellular architecture and improvement of DNA content by the antimutagenic and antioxidant properties of cape gooseberry.
