Abstract

Premature loss of first primary molar usually leads to space loss resulting in future malocclusion. Space maintainers are used to preserve such a space and so reduce the need for orthodontic treatment.Several types of space maintainers are used. The traditional band and loop requires long laboratory procedures and the lost cement may lead to enamel decalcification and so predisposing to caries. Directly bonded space maintainers eliminate the laboratory procedures and are biocotnpatible with a single — visit procedure.Innovations in technology allow the opportunity to test materials such as polyethylene fiber reinforced composite resin. The aim of this study was to clinically and laboratory compare and evaluate fiber-reinforced composite as a space maintainer with conventional band and loop space maintainer. This study was conducted on thirty children in whom 60 space maintainers were fitted, their age ranged from 4-8 years selected from outpatient clinic, Pedodontic Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Suez Canal University. The total number of appliances were (30) bands and loops, (15) fiber loop and (15) fiber bar. The success rate for Summery89 bands and loops was 73.3%, for fiber loops was 53.3% and for fiber bars was 46.6%.
In vitro tests for mechanical properties were made to support the clinical evaluation for both groups regarding the retention and the flexural strength of appliances.
