Abstract

The study was planned to throw the light on estimation of cardiac indices and function using B-mode and M-mode echocardiography in healthy draft horse. The cardiac indices and function includes; IVSTd, IVSTs, LVIDd, LVIDs, LVPWd, LVPWs, EDV, ESV, SV, EF%, and FS%. Experimental Study: Each donkey was injected with tilmicosin phosphate, at a dose rate of 1 mL / 30 kg body weight administrated by subcutaneous injection as described by manufacturer. The results revealed that: The cardiac indices (Mean values ± SD) in clinically healthy equines assessed using both B-mode and M-mode echocardiography. The IVST in donkeys experimentally injected with tilmicosin phosphate during end-diastole and end-systole using echocardiography; revealed non-significant changes in IVSTd using B-mode or M-mode. Moreover, IVSTs revealed non-significant changes using B-mode, but showed a significant (P < 0.05) increase using M-mode 60 minutes following tilmicosin phosphate injection. The LVID in donkeys experimentally injected with tilmicosin phosphate during end-diastole and end-systole using echocardiography; there was non-significant change in LVIDd and LVIDs using B-mode or M-mode. The LVPW in donkeys experimentally injected with tilmicosin phosphate during end-diastole and end-systole using echocardiography; there was non-significant change in LVPWd and LVPWs using B-mode or M-mode. The EDV and ESV in donkeys experimentally injected with tilmicosin phosphate using echocardiography; there was non-significant change in EDV using B-mode or M-mode. In contrast, ESV showed a significant (P < 0.05) increase using B-mode only 60 minutes following injection, but showed non-significant change using M-mode. FS% and EF% in donkeys experimentally injected with tilmicosin phosphate using echocardiography; there was a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in FS% and EF% using both B-mode and M-mode. The SV in donkeys experimentally injected with tilmicosin phosphate using echocardiography; showed non-significant change using both B-mode and M-mode.
