Abstract

This thesis aims at investigating the elements of Modernism in the poetry of Randall Jarrell. Introduction: This chapter deals with Jarrell’s life and literary career as a poet. It also elaborates the definition of Modernism and how it came into existence in addition to the social circumstances that helped shape the century. Moreover, it gives an idea about Jarrell’s concept of Modernism and the characteristics of Modernism as he viewed it. Chapter One: The Theme of Violence Detesting: This chapter examines Jarrell’s poems that deal with the idea of violence detestation which has been one of the themes of modernist poetry. The chapter is primarily concerned with Jarrell’s war poems and how he was able to depict the horror of war and the suffering of the soldiers. Chapter Two: The Entrenched Human Loneliness: This chapter deals with poems that take the idea of human loneliness and the loss of human soul in the modern world as their major theme. It shows how Jarrell was able to convey the sense of human loneliness in the modern world and how this sense has become deeply rooted in the human self. Chapter Three: The Symbolic Use of the Animal World: It focuses on the poems used by Jarrell to draw an analogy between the world of human and that of the animal. Jarrell’s use of symbolism is associated with Modernism as he used the animal world with its primitive life in much the same way Modernists did. Chapter Four: The Use of the Dramatic Monologue: This chapter deals with Jarrell’s use of the dramatic monologue in many of his poems. This poetic form was a characteristic of many Modernists. Jarrell used this poetic form to allow his speakers to express their feelings and to speak about their endeavor in modern life. Conclusion: It gives a summary of the findings of the thesis with consideration to the characteristics of Modernism as they appear in the poetic works of Jarrell.
