Abstract

This study aimed to : Total knee replacements has been introduced to the orthopedics field about 50 years ago, and there has been a lot of developments and improvements to replicate a healthy biological joint, TKR is very common and have high successful rate but through this process and up till now the post-operative satisfaction for the patients and surgeons had not been totally fulfilled. That’s why a lot of associations have been trying to solve this problem by creating a scoring scale system to identify the patients disability or disorder and give him the appropriate treatment, and re-evaluate post-operative to obtain the optimum result for the patient to regain his lifestyle and therefore for better attribution for the country. These scales should be accurate (they measure exactly what they are designed to measure), reliable (they consistently produce the same score on repeated assessment) and responsive (they are able to detect changes that may occur during a period of time) (1), Also it should be free from Ceiling effect which is referring to the level at which an independent variable no longer has an effect on a dependent variable, or to the level above which variance in an independent variable is no longer measured or estimated. And also free from Floor effect (also known as a basement effect) arises when a data-gathering instrument has a lower limit to the data values it can reliably specify. A variety of scoring systems has been published over the years, these scores may be subjective (patient reported) systems, comprehensive (patient and clinical) systems. It may concern with athletic patients with disorders of the knee (scores assessing ligamentous injury), and patients with degenerative disorders of the knee (scores are used to evaluate patients after total knee replacement)(2). The aim of this work is to retrospectively assess short and midterm results of cemented total knee replacement by the use of the new knee society score. The new knee society score had a major improvement over the previous one by adding the satisfaction, the expectation and the advanced activity sub division. All patients had satisfactory results according to the score, in spite of these results patients expectations remains low. This study shows that the new society score is arising the attention for all orthopedic surgeon that they should describe the operation and the output of surgery before the operation so it set the patients mind on what to expect for their activities and life style after the operation.
