Abstract

Tooth development starts at 5th week of human gestation and at 10th embryonic day of mouse development.1 Each tooth passes through four morphological stages: initiation, bud, cap, and bell stages, named according to the shape of enamel organ.2 At late bell stage, odontoblasts secrete first layer of dentin starting dentinogenesis (dentin formation) and amelogenesis (enamel formation) through reciprocal induction To the best of our knowledge, this study was the first attempt to study the effect of maternal RA of mothers on tooth development in their offspring with and without the use of soy protein. Based on the previous results we conclude that : Maternal RA has a transient delaying effect on tooth development in offspring, followed by rapid compensatory mechanism by fetus itself and catch up of normal rate of growth few days after birth. Soy protein appeared to be able to: -Counter act the delaying effect of RA on tooth development. -Accelerate the mineralization of dentin and bone during their development.
