Abstract
Substances abuse remains one of the major medical problems in the world today and it is very important to differentiate between drug misuse, substance use disorder and addiction. Also, the classification of addictive substances has a great value in management of their effects. In addition, understanding the pathophysiology of addiction is important for management of drug abuse. Nevertheless, Diagnosis of addiction and drug abuse is frequently updated depending on the clinical picture and the advances in drug detection technology. On the other hand, there are general methods for treatment of addiction and specific regimens for treatment of abused substances including nicotine, alcohol, cocaine, opioid, amphetamines, cannabinoid and new substances of abuse. Also, auricular acupuncture has been recently applied to treat some addictive disorders. In addition, psychosurgery or surgical treatment of addiction is recently considered a new method for treatment of addiction by targeting and ablating a specific region of the brain which is responsible for reward circuit.
