Abstract

The current experiment had been carried out at the Poultry Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Minofiya University, in the period of 2012 to 2014 for two generations to investigate the possibility of maximizing the genetic improvement of Norfa strain performance as an indigenous Egyptian laying strain. Age at sexual maturity (ASM), body weight at sexual maturity (BWSM), body weight at maturity (BWM), egg weight at sexual maturity (EWSM), egg weight at maturity (EWM), egg number in first 90 days of laying (EN90d) and egg number till 42 weeks of age (EN42WK) were individually recorded for each laying hen. Data collected were subjected to statistical and genetic analysis using appropriate statistical and genetic models and software to analyze the results. Three different selection procedures were used (mass, independent culling levels and selection indices) to obtain the objects of our research. Results obtained and conclusions can be summarized as follows: It was concluded that, using a selection index for the egg production traits studied in Norfa local chicken was able to improve these traits over despite the negative correlation estimated between some traits. Additionally, using multi-sources of information from relatives (i.e. own performance, half-sibs and full-sibs information) able to maximize the expected genetic gain in the traits with high economic impact.
