Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to develop industrial secondary school students’ EFL vocabulary through using project-based learning (PBL). The study adopted the quasi experimental design. Two intact classes from 1st year, Kafr Al Tawila Industrial Secondary School for girls, were systematically assigned to the experimental group (N=32), and the control group (N=31). The experimental group was engaged in a project through studying the syllabus prescribed in the text book “English for Industrial Schools”, year 1. ). The control group, however, was taught only the syllabus prescribed in the text book through the traditional method The two groups were pre-tested and post-tested using a vocabulary achievement test prepared by the researcher. A t-test was employed to measure the differences between the means of the two groups. Results indicated that experimental group students outperformed their counterparts of the control group on the post vocabulary achievement test. On the other hand, a significant improvement in the level of the experimental group students was indicated when comparing students’ pre-scores to their post scores. This indicates that the vocabulary acquisition of the experimental group has been highly improved after the experimental treatment. This implied that project-based learning was successful in enhancing students’ vocabulary acquisition.
