Abstract

ERM cells were claimed to be a vestigial functionless remnant of Hertwig’s epithelial root sheath that are implausible to play an important part in PDL homeostasis. Therefor the current study was carried out in order to depict the effect of traumatic occlusion with and without IAN resection on rat periodontium, at various time intervals from one to nine weeks, with special emphasis on distributions of ERMs. Consequently, the putative role of ERMs in alleviating various degenerative effect on rat periodontium could be recognized. The study was conducted on sixty adult male rats, which were randomly and equally divided into five groups including control group (group I); group II (sham Group); group-III(traumatic occlusion group), group-IV (denervation group) and group-V (traumatic occlusion and denervation). The histological changes were observed using LM and EM.
