Abstract

Detecting the nature of a sonographically indeterminate adnexal mass has great clinical importance as ovarian masses are the leading indication of gynecological surgery. Decisions about the type and extent of surgery depend on this judgment. Benign masses can be managed either conservatively or by simple resection of the mass, depending on the patient’s symptoms and fitness for surgery. So accurate preoperative diagnosis of benign complex masses prevent unnecessary excessive surgical procedures. US is the first imaging modality that can be used for detection of adnexal mass lesion. MRI provides better preoperative characterization of the mass based on different signal intensities and contrast uptake in post contrast images. Ovarian tumors are the second most common gynecological tumor and is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women, malignant masses require radical cancer surgery performed under the care of a specialist gynecologic oncologist. Also in cases of advanced ovarian cancer MRI used in the pre-operative planning , as it considered the best method for detection of spread to the uterus, pelvic sidewall, rectum or bladder.
