Abstract

In the present study, endoscopic examinations on the upper respiratory tract for 75 mature horses, 38 donkeys and 10 foals were performed, in the Surgery Clinic of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Cairo University. Out of the endoscopic examinations, 56 animals encompassed 25 stallions, 9 mares, 8 foals and 14 donkeys, proved to have different disorders.
The results revealed evidences of both the health and the disease conditions in upper respiratory tract of equine. In horses, the disorders were ethmoidal fibromatous swelling, ethmoid glandular cyst acini, lymphoid hyperplasia, pharyngitis, pharyngeal tonsillitis, recurrent laryngeal neuropathy, epiglottic entrapment, rostral displacement of the palatopharyngeal arch, and squamous cell carcinoma in the guttural pouch, cyst formation in the lateral compartment of the guttural pouch and guttural tympanitis and empyema. In donkeys the disorders were tracheal collapse, pharyngitis tracheitis, corniculitis, epiglottitis, and guttural pouch granuloma,
The current study proven that the prevalence and the supreme pharyngeal disorders in horses. The horse’s upper respiratory tract disorders are numerous and prevailing donkey’s disorders. The presence of squamous cell carcinoma, cyst and granuloma in the guttural pouches has been recorded despite their rare occurrence. In addition, ethmoidal glandular cyst acini, pharyngeal mycosis, and pharyngeal tonsillitis have claimed as foremost records.
