Abstract Columns are structural elements used primarily to support compressive loads. It should be design to resist axial compressive forces and moments due to lateral loads. The ECP-203 proposes two methods of analysis for sections subjected to eccentric forces (ultimate strength method (USM) and working stress method (WSM)). This research aims at studying the difference between the two methods of analysis. Sixteen rectangular sections were analysed using USM and WSM. All sections were also analysed using ACI-318 Code. The research presents a comparison between ultimate strength design method and working stress design method proposed by the Egyptian code for concrete structures. Also the research includes a comparison between interaction diagrams for rectangular reinforced concrete section using both Egyptian Code ECP-203 and ACI-318. The comparison showed that the working stress method is more conservative than ultimate strength method especially at in the range of e/t (eccentricity / section height) varies from 0.05 to 1.0. The comparison between ACI and Egyptian Code showed that the ACI is more conservative than ECP especially at large values of e/t = 0.45 to 1.50. However, the Egyptian Code results are more conservative when e/t is less than 0.45 for the studied cases. |
