Abstract

Injuries considered as the leading cause of death and long term disability and a significant contributor to healthcare costs among children worldwide especially who aged 15 - 19 years. In Egypt, injury represents 20% of total deaths. And about 21.7% of non-fatal injuries occurred in age group 10 -19.
A cross-sectional study was carried out on secondary school students in eastern and western part of Cairo. A total of 897 students were interviewed to measure the prevalence of injuries; to explore the associated risk factors for sustaining injury; and to explore the knowledge, attitude and practice of students towards injuries and its prevention through using self-administered questionnaire.
The results of study showed that the overall prevalence of injuries was (68.5%) with no statistical significant difference between males and females in occurrence of injury. The most frequent cause of sustained injury was fall 0%), Burns (38.6%), violence related injuries (36.5%) and Road traffic injuries (27.5%). Hospitalization rate due to injury was (16.1%). The places where injuries occurred mostly were Homes (40.6%), streets (31.6%) and schools (13.5%). The most reported injuries were unintentional in nature (87.9%), intentional injuries 12.1%).
The results of present study showed risk behaviors among students as (27.2%) of students had history of truancy, Smoking (8.5%), drug abuser (2.5%) and (4.1%) were alcohol drinker. Students reported experiencing quarrelling behavior were (61.3%), Carrying weapons (12.2%), threatened with weapon (10.7%), verbal bullying (29.3%) and Suicidal thoughts (28%).
There was statistical significant association between risk behaviors and injury occurrence as truancy, smoking, alcohol use, quarreling behavior, carrying weapon, threatened by weapon and verbal bullying. Risk score was higher among males and injured students.
Statistical significant difference was found in knowledge and attitude scores between males and females, where Knowledge score was higher in males, and attitude score was found higher in females; but, no difference in practice score. There was significant difference only in practice score in relation to the probability of injury occurrence, where injured students had lower practice score mean than those not injured.
The high prevalence of injury and the poor knowledge, attitude and practice among students revealed the need for development of injury control and prevention programs targeting adolescents.
Also, there is need to establish health educational programs that address the risk behaviors, which may offer an effective and efficient method for young people changing behavior.
And there is need for establishing ongoing injury surveillance to track injuries and their risk factors and to monitor the impact of appropriate interventions.
