Abstract

Breast cancer is a significant health problem worldwide and a complex disease both physically and psychologically, mastectomy is an essential but disfiguring operation in breast cancer treatment, it produces a significant effect on a woman’s body’s image and self-esteem and sexual life, therefore, this study aimed to assess body’s image, self-esteem and quality of sexual life among post mastectomy women.A descriptive exploratory research design was conducted at the outpatient clinics of oncology center at Mansoura University. The data was collected from 200 post mastectomy women who corresponded to the inclusion criteria.Socio-demographic and clinical data sheet, Hoopwood body’s image Scale, Rosenberg self-esteem scale and Post mastectomy quality of sexual life scale were used to achieve the purpose of the study. Results revealed that only (2.5 %) of studied patients have minimum concerns of their body’s image, about quarter(26%)have moderate concerns of their body’s image and nearly three quarters (71.5) have high concerns of their body’s image. There were statistically significant relations between body’s image and (age, educational level, occupation and other surgical operations) while there were no statistical significance relations with (residence, medical diseases, psychological complains, chemotherapy and radiotherapy). Regarding, self-esteem, results revealed that only nearly quarter (21%) studied patients have low self-esteem, and about three quarters (75.5) have normal range of self-esteem and only(3.5 %)have high self-esteem.There is no statistical significance in the relation between self-esteem and (age, educational level, occupation, residence, medical diseases, other surgical operations, chemotherapy and radiotherapy), but there is statistically significant relation between self-esteem and psychological complains.Concerning quality of sexual life, about two thirds (66%) studied patients have unsatisfactory quality of sexual life, while the other third (34%) have satisfactory quality of sexual life. There is statistically significant relation between quality of sexual life and age, there is no statistical significance in relation with educational level, occupation, residence, medical diseases, psychological complains, other surgical operations, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Body’s image is correlated negatively to self-esteem which indicates that distress and body’s image concerns of the studied patients increase when the level of the self-esteem of the studied patients decrease and vice versa. While the body’s image isn’t correlated with quality of sexual life, self-esteem is correlated positively with quality of sexual life which indicates that increasing the self-esteem of the studied patients increase with quality of sexual life and vice versa. To conclude, the vast majority of the studied patients had high concerns and distress of their body’s image which adversely affect their self-esteem and consequently affected their quality of sexual life. Application of psychiatric liaison nursing program for post mastectomy women is recommended.
