Abstract

Overweight is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a BMI between the 85th and 94th percentile and obesity is defined at or above the 95th percentile for children of the same age and sex.1Globally In 2010, 43 million children (35 million in developing countries) were estimated to be overweight and obese; 92 million were at risk of overweight.2The greatest annual increases in obesity of school-aged children since 1970 have occurred in North America and Western Europe. However, 75% of overweight and obese children live in low- and middle-income countries. 3
The highest prevalence rates of childhood obesity have been observed in developed countries, however, its prevalence is increasing in developing countries as well. The prevalence of childhood obesity is high in the Middle East, Central and Eastern Europe.4On the basis of data from (88%) of the total population aged under 5 years, it was estimated that 3.3% (or 17.5 million) of preschool children were overweight in developing countries in 1995. 5
The percentage of overweight children was highest in Latin America and the Caribbean 4.4%), followed by Africa (3.9%) and Asia (2.9%). However, in absolute numbers, Asia had the highest numbers of overweight children; 60 %( or 10.6 million) of the overweight children from developing countries lived in this region. 5
In Egypt, the prevalence of overweight was over 25%in pre-school children ,and in children in the age range of 11-14 years the prevalence of overweight was 14%for boys and 21% for girls.6.
