Abstract • This study was conducted on 20 hands in 20 females all of them suffered from unilateral carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosed clinically and investigated with electro-physiological study. • Age of the patients of this study ranged between 25 and 55 years with a mean of 40.28.9 years • All of the patients were females, house wives and right handed. • The duration of compliant ranged from 8 to 24 months with a mean of 14.60 5.906 months. • The main complaint was nocturnal paraesthesia was present in 18 hands (90%). pain at work, 17 hands (85%). While constant paraesthesia was present only in 7 hands (35%). Tinel’s sign was positive in 100% of hands, Phalen sign was positive in 72.5% of hands and direct compression test was positive in 100% of hands. • Median nerve entrapment was confirmed by electrophysiological studies that showed motor delay in all cases. • Medical treatment in the form of non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs was tried in all cases without appreciated improvement. • Surgical decompression was done by slitting the flexor retinaculum by limited palmar approach (LPA) in 20 hands. • The period of follow up was 24 weeks. • There were no complications from the surgery. • Postoperative DML after 24 months showed good improvment. • The end result was not influenced by age. • The end result was influenced by the duration of complaint, the longer the duration the worse was the end results. • Nocturnal paraesthesia was significantly improved two weeks post-operatively. |
