Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of three manual toothbrushes (Oral-B Exceed toothbrush, Oral-B Pulsar toothbrush and Silver Care plus toothbrush) versus the traditional ordinary toothbrush.
Materials and methods: 120 children were enrolled in the study and divided into 4 equal groups. Clinical evaluation and plaque scoring were performed at five study visits (after 2 weeks, one month, two months, and then three months) using the Rustogi et al. Modified Navy Plaque Index (RMNPI) and the Turesky et al. Modified Quigley-Hein Plaque Index (TQHPI). One examiner performed all clinical measurements. Data collected was then statistically analyzed and Results were tabulated.
Results: The results showed that at the five study visits, there was no statistically significant difference between the four toothbrushes using either the TQHPI or the RMNPI. It showed that with all types of brushes, there was no statistically significant change in mean TQHPI index and mean RMNPI index by time. It also showed that there was a significant positive (direct) correlation between the two plaque indices used.
Conclusions: There was no statistically significant difference in the mean RMNPI index and mean TQHPI index values between the 3 types of manual toothbrushes compared to the ordinary one in the 5 subsequent visits and there was a statistically significant positive correlation between the two indices used in measuring plaque.
