Abstract

A lot of work was devoted to incorporating different dyes into solid matrices in order to obtain solid-state laser emission ranging from the near UV to the near IR to replace the classical liquid dye laser emission. Also, some important applications such as underwater communications and remote sensing of atmospheric contaminants devices required the laser to work in a solid form. The aim of this work is to design a dye laser system with a solid active material that gives a laser output of different wavelengths through inserting different samples to alter the output wavelength. These samples have been prepared from three dyes two of them are from pyrromethene family (PM-567, PM-597) and the third belong to xanthene family (R6G) doped in HEMA / MMA copolymer as solid host material with different concentrations (2x10-4, 4x10-4, 6x10-4, 8x10-4, 1x10-3, 2x10-3mol/L), (4x10-4, 6x10-4, 1x10-3, 2x10-3, 4x10-3mol/L) and (2x10-4, 6x10-4, 1x10-3, 2x10-3mol/L) , respectively. The samples were prepared in rod-shape then ground and cut in to slides of thickness 1 mm. Compare optical and laser performance of three laser dyes. The absorption and excitation – emission spectra for these samples were measured with a Camspec M501 UV/Visible spectrophotometer and a PF-6300 spectro fluorometer, respectively. Measurements and calculations of some optical parameters such as: molecular extinction coefficient (ε), absorption (σa) and emission (σe) cross sections, fluorescence quantum yield (фf) and fluorescence lifetime (τf) for (PM-567, PM-597 and Rh6G) laser dyes doped in HEMA / MMA polymer host were determined for the optimum concentration (2x10-3 mol/L). Also, other some important optical properties of the three laser dyes in polymeric host were assessed and tabulated in tables. These properties such as the oscillator strength (f), the transition dipole moment μ12, the attenuation length Λ(λ), the energy of fluorescence (Ef), irradiative decay rate (Kr) and intersystem crossing rate (Kisc) give good information about laser performance of the three laser dyes in this polymeric host. The effect of the variation of dye concentrations of (PM567, PM597 and R6G) doped in HEMA/MMA polymeric host on the laser performance in resonating cavity have been studied by pumping these samples by Nd-YAG laser of 532nm (Continuum PL7010), of pulse width (" ~ "8ns) at a repetition rate of 10Hz. The pump pulses energy was controlled and varied between 1 and 30 mJ/pulse. The energies of the output and the input pulses were measured by a beam splitter (4%) and a Gentec power meter equipped with head (Model QE50). Each output value is averaging energy values of more than 5 pulses .The Nd-YAG laser beam was directed transversely through the samples with 2cm length and 1cm width for each of the three laser dyes. The results obtained for R6G dye in its polymer host showed higher laser performance and photo stability than pyrromenthene laser dye samples.
